De la Toison au Tricot n̊ 16 “Conception du fil”

My mother always told me that I should think before I speak. Of course she had a point! But I’d go one further and say that you need to think before you spin.

Ma mère m’a toujours dit de penser avant de parler. Et bien sûr, elle avait raison! Cependant, moi, j’irai encore plus loin ... penser avant de filer!

It’s far too easy to spin withouth thinking! Too often this results in all sorts of odd balls of yarn in different gages & different colors. And at the end of the day, nother quite goes together & it’s difficult to actually make anything from all of those interesting bits and pieces.
One way to avoid this problem is to plan ahead. To think before you spin!
Of course I’m not suggesting that you plan out every project that you might consider making in the coming year – rather, before you start spinning, look at the fiber that you have and think about how you can make the most out of what you have.

C’est bien trop facile de filer sans penser. Trop souvent on finit par avoir toutes sortes de petites pelotes de laine de toutes les couleurs et de toutes les épaisseurs! Et en fin compte; il n’y en a pas qui vont ensemble et il s’avère très difficile d’en faire quoi que ce soit!
Pour éviter ce piège il faut prévoir! Bref, concevoir avant de filer!
Bien sûr je ne suggère pas que vous planifiez l’ensemble de vos projets éventuels – pourtant avant de vous lancer dans le filage, réfléchissez un peu ... pensez aux toisons à votre disposition et considérez les possibilités.

I have decided that all of the combing waste will be carded and spun then used for various “knit to felt” projects like berets, slippers, bags, etc ... so this will be easy! All of the combing waste will be spun at 8 to 8.5 wpi!

J’ai décidé de carder puis de filer l’ensemble des déchets du peignage pour des projets “tricoter pour feutrer” comme béret, pantoufle, sac, etc. Alors ça sera facile : tout les déchets du peignage seront filés à 8 à 8,5 wpi.

The combed top is another thing altogether.
To make it simple, almost all of this will be spun at 14 wpi which is my all purpose gage for knitwear. That said, I’m thinking about making at least one lace shawl which will need a much finer yarn. So I’ll need to set aside some wool for this purpose.

Par contre, la laine peignée c’est autre chose. Pour rendre les choses plus facile, j’en filerai la plupart à 14 wpi, ce qui correspond à un fil polyvalent que j’utilise pour la plupart de mes projets. Ceci dit, je songe faire au moins un châle en dentelle pour lequel il faut un fil beaucoup plus fin. Alors, il me faut réserver un peu de laine pour ce projet.
