Mis en tenue et prêt à y aller!

This year I have 3 small breeding groups. The rams and the ewes have been separated since mid-August. Two weeks ago, on the 6th of November, I spent the day moving sheep into their groups, worming and treating each one, checking and trimming feet, and fitting each one with their coat for the winter.

Cette année, j’ai trois petits groupes de reproduction. Les béliers et les brebis ont été séparés depuis la mi-août. Il y a deux semaines, le 6 novembre, j’ai constitué mes trois groupes. En même temps j’ai traité chaque mouton ; ensuite j’ai vérifié l’état des onglons et les ai coupés si besoin était ; finalement je leur ai enfilé un petit manteau.

Jasper, my young grey ram will be spending the next two months with Paline, Nougatine & Cassonade, three brown ewes, and Rosalie and Margaret, two black ewes.

Jasper, jeune bélier gris, va passer les deux prochains mois avec Praline, Nougatine & Cassonade, trois brebis brunes (noisette), et avec Rosalie et Margaret, deux brebis noires.


At 8 months and 38 cm, Jasper is too small for his coat. Even with his voluminous fleece, the smallest sized coat is too big for him. I ended up altering his coat to fit him better.

À 8 mois et avec ses 38 cm, Jasper s’avère trop petit pour son manteau! Même avec sa toison volumineuse, le plus petit manteau fut trop grand pour lui. Alors, j’ai fini par l’ajuster à sa taille.

As for Mac, my young brown ram, he will be keeping company with Mira & Mysti, two grey ewes and ‘TitBijou & Onyx, two black ewes.

Quant à Mac, jeune bélier brun, il tient compagnie à Mira & Mysti, deux brebis grises et ‘TitBijou & Onyx, deux brebis noires.

Both of these young rams will bring some of the rarer (recessive) color genetics to my flock.

These two breeding groups should produce a total of 9 lambs next spring. I am expecting all lambs to be black ...BUT there is a possibility of one or two grey lambs from the grey x brown matings. This will largely depend on a certain amount of luck and wether or not any of the browns carry the gene for color modification. I think that both Praline & Mac do ... but am less sure about Nougatine & Cassonade. At any rate time will tell.

Chacun de ces deux béliers apporte à mon troupeau des gènes de couleur rares car récessifs.

À partir de ces deux groupes de reproduction, 9 agneaux devraient naître au printemps prochain. Je prévois 9 agneaux noirs ... POURTANT, il se peut qu’un ou deux agneaux gris naissent des accouplements gris x brun. En gros, cela dépend si mes bruns portent en eux le gène de modification de couleurs. Je pense bien que Praline et Mac le portent ... je suis moins certaine pour Nougatine & Cassonade. De toute façon, on verra bien!

I am really looking forward to seeing next years lambs.

Just to summerize :

• 5 grey x brown matings : all lambs will carry both grey and brown and all lambs will be black, with the possibility (hopefully) of one or two grey lambs
• 2 grey x black matings : both lambs will be blacks that carry grey
• 2 brown x black matings : both lambs will be blacks that carry brown

The third breeding group is an all white group ... but more about that one later!

• 5 accouplements gris x brun dont tous les agneaux seront porteurs de gris et brun ; les agneaux seront noirs ... avec la possibilité d’un ou deux agneaux gris.
• 2 accouplements gris x noir dont les deux agneaux seront noirs porteurs de gris.
• 2 accouplements brun x noir dont les deux agneaux seront noirs porteurs de brun.

Le troisième groupe de reproduction se constitue d’un bélier blanc et deux brebis blanches ... on en parlera plus tard!
