Sheep to Sweater Sunday n° 28 " Ready to Spin ! "

For the past few days I’ve been knitting up samples for my fair isle cardigan.

I need to come up with a yarn that will give me a gage of 27 stitches per 4 inches in stockinette stitch. After a few tries, I think I’ve come up with a yarn that will work. It’s a 2-ply yarn that measures 444 yards per 3.5 oz (100 g), knit on 2mm (US 0) knitting needles.

So I need :

900 yards (7.5 oz) black wool
450 yards (3.5 oz) grey (oatmeal) wool
450 yards (3.5 oz) honey-beige wool
450 yards (3.5 oz) heather wool
305 yards (2.5 oz) green wool
305 yards (2.5 oz) brown wool

In all, that’s 2,860 yards (just under 23 oz) or 2-ply yarn ... which is over 3 miles of yarn before plying. Whew! Have I got my work cut out for me!

My goal is to finish the spinning in January.
Okay! Let’s get to work!

Thanks Amy!
It's a lot of yarn ... but once I broke it down a bit... you know ... even if I spin just 1 oz of wool per day (hey that's do-able) ... in just 21 days all the wool is ready to knit. It's true when you think of the yardage and weight it can be a bit overwhelming! But 30 grams (approx 1 oz) ... so I'm thinking baby steps here!! yeah I can do that! I'm really excited about this project too. I love Meg's design. I'd would be soooo proud and happy to pull this one off! I've knit lots of things before, even a few sweaters ... but this is a pretty big project to do all in handspun ... lots of things to consider before just jumping in! Most of my projects have been smaller bit's and pieces like hats, scarves, socks, etc ....
Thanks again for visiting!
